Scientists in New Zealand were able to culture Salmonella sp. from approximately 6 percent of pet chew treats tested, according to a study now available through the Journal of Applied Microbiology OnlineEarly article series (the study will also be published in a forthcoming issue of the journal). The authors of the study found Salmonella in similar percentages of domestic and imported pet chews. However, because one of the Salmonella isolates from the imported pet chews had not previously been reported in New Zealand, the authors express concern that imported pet chews are introducing novel and antibiotic-resistant strains of the bacterium to New Zealand.
