The University of Guelph Laboratory Services department has posted images of crystals taken from a cat suspected to have ingested melamine-tainted food. Guelph hasn’t been able to identify the cystals yet, but mass spectrometry shows them to be 30 percent melamine and to have a different spectrum than ammonium urate or xanthine. Several veterinarians on VIN are reporting seeing crystals similar to those posted by Guelph.

Poison information centers do not report symptoms associated with melamine consistent with those reported by vets in association with this event. See http://www.pesticideinfo.org/Detail_Poisoning.jsp?Rec_Id=PC35459#Symptoms
Granted this is human information.
Do you feel that this is conclusive that the poisoning was definately related to melamine contamination owing to differences in animal physiology, or could there still be other factors?
Also, what about aminoptering findings?
Could there have been multiple contaminations here?
My dog died with symptoms more consistent with the latter and had just been fed an older lot outside those identified by the recall.

Keep asking questions, Bernie. This recall is just a watershed event that has awakened the public to insidious influence of big interests on the pet health businesses. We’re focused on this event right now, and rightly so. But we also must be asking: how many other animals have been made sick or killed over the years by these same complex of big money interests? I’ll tell you – I’m outspoken on this as atonement for previous beloved pet and as the only way I can atone for not having asked a lot of questions a lot sooner. My attitude now is: I’m from Missouri and I ask a lot of questions and i don’t care whether you like it or not. It’s the least i can do. And I’m not going to forget what the real problem is after the recall has died down. Join the group.
