Cathy, seitan is just a base.
It tastes however you flavor it, and it can have virtually any texture you want it to have.

China has a severe population problem, and the Aminopterin which was found in the wheat gluten from China is an abortifacient. (It induces abortions.)

Now I'm just guessing here, but perhaps that Chinese gluten was never intended for animal consumption.

It makes perfect sense, that the government would want to reduce the fertility of the population, and puts an additive in the food to accomplish this.

Wheat gluten is a major export of Europe. Hmm. This is curious. News reports of the South African dry pet food recall (contaminated with ethylene glycol) which time-wise closely parallels the Menu Foods recall, reported that a raw ingredient, which the company, Aquanutro, refused to identify, had been imported from Europe--the identity of the supplier was also withheld.

Is there any way to find out the raw material implicated in the South African recall. It'd be interesting to know if it, too, was wheat gluten. And, if not, what was it?

How can corporations get away with poisoning consumers' pets and still be afforded the luxury of withholding information from the public? Aquanutro withheld both the identity of the contaminated raw ingredient and its European supplier; Menu Foods has refuse to name the supplier of the wheat germ they suspect is the contaminant's source, other than to say it came from China. Don't we, as consumers, deserve full disclosure from these companies?

A little history on the wheat gluten industry, though only through 2004:
http://www.ampc.montana.edu/briefings/briefing76.pdf

I researched wheat gluten last week as I didn't know what it was either. I DID eat seitan once at a veg place. It was tasteless and had a disgusting texture.

BTW, MGP quit selling wheat gluten to MenuFoods 18 months ago. Hmmmmm

Want some?
